Disaster Assistance to Southeast Texas Residents

In response to the recent deadly storms, FEMA is providing critical disaster assistance to residents of southeast Texas, particularly those in Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, and Walker counties. Following the destructive storms and last month’s flooding, FEMA has introduced new aid programs to support Texans in their recovery efforts.

New Assistance Programs

FEMA is offering a one-time $750 payment per household through the Serious Need Assistance (SNA) program. This benefit is available to those who suffered damage from the storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding that began on April 26. The SNA payment is intended to cover essential needs such as water, food, first aid, breastfeeding supplies, infant formula, diapers, personal hygiene items, and fuel for transportation. This assistance is in addition to any other aid applicants may receive.

Additionally, FEMA has launched the Displacement Assistance program. This benefit provides financial support for housing needs if residents cannot return home due to the disaster. The funds can be used for temporary accommodation in hotels, with family and friends, or other arrangements.

Eligibility and Application Process

To qualify for the SNA program, applicants must indicate on their FEMA application that they are displaced, need shelter, or have other emergency costs due to the disaster. Both the SNA and Displacement Assistance programs require an inspection to confirm eligibility before funds are disbursed.

Eligibility criteria for additional FEMA assistance include:

  • Completing a FEMA application.
  • FEMA confirmation of the applicant’s identity.
  • The applicant’s primary residence is in a declared disaster area.
  • Confirmation of disaster damage through an inspection or submitted documentation.
  • Applying for FEMA assistance while the SNA and Displacement Assistance programs are available.

Residents can apply for assistance through several channels:

For those who prefer in-person assistance, FEMA representatives are available daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Fonde Community Center, 110 Sabine St., Houston, TX 77007.
  • Spring Branch Family Development Center, 8575 Pitner Road, Houston, TX 77080.

Required Information for Application

Applicants should have the following information ready when applying:

  • Social security number.
  • Address of the damaged property.
  • Description of the damage.
  • Information about insurance coverage.
  • Current contact telephone number.
  • Address where mail can be received.
  • Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit of funds.

Beware of Scammers

Officials warn that disasters often attract scammers posing as official disaster aid workers or federal agents. These individuals may attempt to steal personal information under the guise of helping with FEMA applications. FEMA urges residents to verify the identity of inspectors, who will wear FEMA shirts and carry official badges but will not arrive in marked vehicles. Inspectors will not visit homes unless an application has been submitted and will never ask for money. Residents can call FEMA to confirm an inspector’s identity if unsure.
