Tropical Weather Update: Eye On The Gulf

A large area of unsettled weather has developed over Central America and the northwestern Caribbean Sea. Tropical formation odds from NHC are now high (70%) for the disturbance currently over the Yucatan Peninsula. This disturbance is expected to turn into a low-pressure system over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico in the next day or two. Conditions are favorable for it to gradually strengthen, possibly becoming a tropical depression by midweek as it moves slowly westward or west-northwestward.

Regardless of whether it develops into a tropical depression, this system is expected to bring several days of heavy rain to southern Mexico and Central America, potentially causing dangerous flooding and flash flooding. Currently, there is a low (10 percent) chance of this system developing into a tropical depression in the next 48 hours, but the chance increases to medium (60 percent) in the next 7 days.

For the Houston area, it’s crucial to stay aware of this system’s development. While it’s too early to predict its exact impact on Houston, any significant changes in its path or strength could bring heavy rainfall and potential flooding to our region. Make sure to monitor tropical updates closely over the next few days.

Additionally, another area of low pressure is expected to form by midweek a few hundred miles northeast of the central Bahamas. This system also has a chance to develop as it moves westward or west-northwestward. Its chances of forming into a tropical system are near zero in the next 48 hours but increase to low (30 percent) over the next 7 days.
