CenterPoint Energy Continues to Restore Power After Hurricane Beryl

Houston, July 9, 2024 – In the wake of Hurricane Beryl, CenterPoint Energy is working around the clock to restore power to the 2.26 million customers affected by the storm. As of this afternoon, over 640,000 homes and businesses have had their electricity restored, but approximately 1.6 million remain without power. The hurricane brought winds as strong as 97 mph in Brazoria County, 89 mph in Harris County, and 78 mph in Galveston County, causing extensive damage to the power grid.

Intensive Restoration Efforts Underway

Since it became safe to deploy crews, CenterPoint Energy has focused on the most severely affected areas, such as Galveston and Brazoria County. In Galveston, 250 power poles on a single circuit were downed, and in Brazoria, hundreds of trees fell onto power lines. Despite these challenges, CenterPoint aims to restore power to 1 million customers by the end of tomorrow.

Proactive Preparedness and Response

CenterPoint had been tracking Hurricane Beryl from its inception and secured assistance from other utilities before the storm made landfall. Nearly 12,000 workers are now engaged in the restoration efforts. Additionally, mobile units, including emergency facilities and cooling centers, have been deployed to assist those in need.

Crew Staging Area

“We understand how difficult it is to be without electricity, especially in the heat of July,” said Lynnae Wilson, Senior Vice President of Electric Business at CenterPoint. “We are utilizing all available resources to restore power quickly and safely. We are deeply appreciative of the support from other utilities and first responders.”

Addressing Extreme Heat Conditions

Customers have been enduring extreme heat as temperatures soared to the mid-90s today. Cooling centers have been established throughout the Houston area to provide relief. However, many residents lack the means to travel to these centers, exacerbating the situation. CenterPoint is prioritizing the restoration of power to essential services, including hospitals and emergency facilities, to ensure community safety and health.
