Sergeant Injured in Officer-Involved Shooting Near Galleria Mall

Houston, TX – A Houston Police Department sergeant working an off-duty security job was injured, along with a suspect, in an officer-involved shooting in the Galleria area on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred around 5:20 p.m. near 5000 Westheimer Rd, close to the Galleria Mall. According to Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir, the sergeant identified a vehicle believed to be connected to a jugging incident from the previous day.

As the sergeant attempted to confront the driver, the suspect fled the private property and began driving on the wrong side of Westheimer Rd. In the process, the sergeant was pinned between the suspect’s vehicle and another car. The sergeant then fired multiple shots, striking the driver several times.

Despite his injuries, the suspect continued across Westheimer before coming to a stop, where officers detained him and administered medical aid. He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, though his current condition is unknown.

The sergeant, a 25-year HPD veteran, was also hospitalized but is expected to survive. In line with HPD policy, he will be placed on administrative duties while the investigation continues. Body-worn camera footage of the incident will be released within 30 days.

Traffic on Westheimer has since reopened, and the incident remains under investigation. HTX News will update this story as more information becomes available.
