Train Derailment in Waller County Overturns Dozens of Cars, Disrupts Major Roadway

On Monday, October 20, 2025, a train operated by Union Pacific Railroad derailed near the intersection of Business U.S. Route 290 (Business 290) and James Muse Parkway in Waller County, Texas, prompting significant traffic closures and a large‑scale recovery operation. According to the county fire marshal’s office, the incident occurred at approximately 6:00 p.m. Central Time.

The derailment involved roughly 23 rail cars, which reportedly carried aggregate materials (gravel). Several of the boxcars overturned, spilling their loads and blocking adjacent tracks and roadways.
Local officials later noted initial counts of around 17 cars, with subsequent updates bringing the figure higher. The wreckage was located near Old Houston Highway and James Muse Parkway.

Authorities with the Waller County Sheriff’s Office and the Fire Marshal’s Office confirmed that no injuries were reported and no hazardous materials were involved in the derailment.
Union Pacific issued a statement remarking:

“Around 6 p.m. CT Monday, approximately 23 rail cars on a Union Pacific train derailed … near Prairie View, Texas. No one was hurt and no hazmat is involved. Cleanup is underway and the incident is under investigation.”

Roadway Closures & Traffic Impact

The derailment triggered multiple closures in the area:

  • Business 290 westbound at FM 362 was shut down for an extended period to allow clean‑up and recovery operations.
  • Business 290 eastbound at James Muse Parkway also remained closed while emergency crews and Union Pacific personnel worked the scene.
  • Old Houston Highway between Blinka Road and G‑H Circle was reported closed to traffic during the initial response.

Investigation & Recovery

Track repairs and removal of the derailed cars were underway through Tuesday, with full restoration expected once clearance and inspections are complete. Investigators from Union Pacific and local emergency agencies are examining the scene to determine cause of the derailment. The company emphasized their top priority is safe restoration of service.
