East Harris County – 08.14.26 : A major four-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 10 near Freeport Boulevard left one person dead and several others injured Friday evening, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded at approximately 6:07 p.m. to the crash, which involved a parked heavy hauler and three passenger vehicles: a Hyundai sedan, a Honda sedan and a BMW SUV.
According to investigators, the heavy hauler was parked along the freeway as crews prepared for planned construction work. Several construction barrels had been placed in the No. 4 lane.
The three passenger vehicles were traveling westbound on the mainlanes when they came into contact with one another. Investigators say the vehicles then began moving off the mainlanes toward the service road. The Hyundai ultimately struck the parked heavy hauler. One adult occupant of the Hyundai was killed in the collision.
Two other occupants of the Hyundai, including the driver, were transported to a hospital in critical but stable condition. Investigators later reported that their conditions were improving. The Honda overturned after leaving the mainlanes. Its adult male driver was transported to a hospital in stable condition and is cooperating with investigators. The BMW SUV was also involved in the crash.
HCSO confirmed that all of the people involved were adults and no juveniles were involved. There was one confirmed fatality. Investigators have not yet determined what caused the initial chain reaction or why the vehicles began leaving the mainlanes.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says investigators have already secured video of the crash and are working to obtain additional footage from cameras in the area. Investigators may also conduct a crash reconstruction and, when possible, download information from the vehicles’ event data recorders.
Authorities said the involved drivers have cooperated with the investigation. At this time, investigators do not believe alcohol or intoxication appears to have been a factor.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the fatal collision.
