Humble, Texas – What began as a frightening evening at Deerbrook Mall in Humble has now become a story not only about a shooting, but also about compassion and the power of community support.
The incident happened Saturday when gunfire erupted inside Deerbrook Mall during an altercation involving juveniles. Police responded to the mall after reports of a shooting. One juvenile was wounded and transported to a hospital for treatment. An adult bystander was also injured after being struck in the finger.
For one local family, the shooting quickly became a terrifying fight to get to safety. Alina and her family were inside the mall when the gunfire began. Alina had been trying on shoes when the shooting happened. As the family rushed to escape, she ran from the area wearing only one of the shoes she had been trying on. Her other shoe and some of her belongings were left behind as the family focused on getting away from the gunfire and finding safety.
The experience left a lasting impression on Alina and her family. What was supposed to be an ordinary trip to the mall suddenly became an experience filled with fear and uncertainty. The children were forced to react to a situation they never expected to encounter, running for safety as people around them tried to get away from the shooting.

I was there with Andrew from Iron Walk for Kids when he met with Alina and her family. Andrew told me that after learning about what happened to Alina, he wanted to do something to help. He knew that she had left the mall with only one shoe and wanted to make sure she had a new pair.
Andrew took Alina back to the mall and purchased her a brand new pair of shoes. He also bought a pair for her sister, Ava. What could have been simply a replacement for something lost during the chaos became something much more meaningful for the family.
For Alina, the shoes were connected to the frightening moments when she had to run from the mall. Returning to the same location and receiving a new pair gave her an opportunity to create a different memory associated with that place.
Andrew’s gesture was about more than buying shoes. It was about showing the family that people cared about what they had experienced and that they did not have to face the aftermath alone. His involvement with Iron Walk for Kids reflects his commitment to helping children, and his decision to step in for Alina and Ava was a simple but powerful example of that.

It cannot undo the moments of uncertainty or the memories that may remain with the family after such a frightening experience. But an act of kindness can provide comfort during a difficult time, especially when it comes from someone who simply wants to help.
