Roommate Charged With Murder in Fatal Bear Creek Meadows Shooting

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A 31-year-old man has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of his 61-year-old roommate Wednesday afternoon in the Bear Creek Meadows area of northwest Harris County, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced the arrest of Devin J. Heard in a community advisory posted Thursday.

Deputies responded October 7 to a residence in the 6400 block of Hayman Drive, where emergency medical personnel were performing lifesaving measures on 61-year-old Joseph Lemelle Jr., who had been found unresponsive.

Lemelle was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased from a gunshot wound.

Investigation Leads to Murder Charge

HCSO homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the residence to investigate the circumstances surrounding Lemelle’s death.

During the investigation, detectives learned that Lemelle and Heard, his roommate, had reportedly been involved in an argument that escalated into a shooting.

Investigators allege that Heard shot Lemelle.

Heard was taken into custody and charged with murder. He was subsequently booked into the Harris County Jail, according to the sheriff’s office.

The arrest marks a significant development in the investigation, which initially left authorities working to determine the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

The shooting occurred in the 6400 block of Hayman Drive in the Bear Creek Meadows neighborhood near Katy. Deputies and investigators secured the scene while gathering evidence.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing. Additional details about the case may be released as the investigation progresses.
