Hermann Park Conservancy invites you and your family to join us at the long-awaited debut of the Commons.
Calling all Houstonians! Get ready to experience a whole new side of Hermann Park. After two years of construction, The Commons, a sprawling 26-acre development in the park’s southwest corner, is finally set to open its doors to the public on April 13, 2024!
From Underused to Unforgettable
Previously an under-utilized area, The Commons has been transformed into a vibrant and inviting space designed for the entire community. Architect Marlon Blackwell and landscape architects Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA) aimed to create a welcoming gateway to the park, a lively community hub, and a valuable new asset for Houston.
A Playground Paradise
The centerpiece of The Commons is sure to be a hit with families: The expansive Play Gardens! This two-acre playground reimagines the legacy of the Buddy Carruth Playground for All Children, offering inclusive play experiences for all ages and abilities.
Here’s a sneak peek at what awaits your little explorers:
- Swing Hill:Â A classic playground experience with state-of-the-art swings.
- Cypress Grove:Â Play equipment shaped like friendly snakes and alligators for a whimsical nod to Houston’s native wildlife.
- Gorilla Forest:Â Play structures resembling a friendly, larger-than-life gorilla, a tribute to the neighboring Houston Zoo.
- Splash Cove:Â A water play area with jets of water for cooling down on hot days.
- The Bayou:Â An interactive water feature where kids can learn about Houston’s natural waterways.
- Space Adventure:Â A 45-foot-tall Rocket Ship slide and a space capsule for climbing and imaginative play.
- The Thicket:Â A wooded area with age-appropriate features for younger children, including The Burrow, Toad Hollow, and the Snake Den.
- Carousel:Â A beautiful carousel with a modern twist, sure to become a park favorite.
A Place for Everyone
The Commons caters to everyone, not just families with young children. Here are some highlights for all ages:
- Central Lawn:Â A large, open area perfect for relaxing or enjoying informal sports activities.
- Live Oak Terrace:Â A shaded deck built around the park’s iconic oak trees, offering gathering tables and lounge furniture for picnics, gatherings, and enjoying the outdoors.
- New Grilling and Picnic Areas:Â Perfect for a cookout with family and friends.
- Historic Fannin Pavilion:Â This beautifully restored pavilion will be a central feature, offering food stations, a food truck court, and custom seating.
Connecting with Nature
The Commons isn’t just about fun and games. The master plan also prioritizes the restoration and conservation of the natural areas bordering McGovern Lake. Visitors can connect with nature through:
