HEROES IN ACTION
Houston, TX (Downtown) – On May 16, during a powerful derecho storm that swept through Houston, three METRO Police Officers – W. Koual, B. Wiley, and E. Rodriguez – acted swiftly to save a man’s life.
The storm sent debris flying through the air, and one man was struck by shrapnel, causing a severe laceration to his arm. Fortunately, Officers Koual, Wiley, and Rodriguez were nearby and responded immediately. Officer Byron Wiley was flagged down by a passerby while driving downtown and directed to the Wells Fargo Plaza. Dashcam footage from attorney Michael Lombardino shows the injured man walking down Louisiana Street, clutching his arm as debris blows around him.
“The laceration was pretty deep. He was losing a lot of blood pretty quickly,” Officer Wiley said in an interview with ABC 13 News. Wasting no time, Wiley applied a makeshift tourniquet using a trash bag from a nearby cleaning lady. “Everything happened so quickly. I couldn’t grab my medical kit, so I utilized a trash bag from one of the cleaning ladies that was there.”
Officer Wiley called for backup, and Officers Eddie Rodriguez and Walid Koual arrived promptly. Their teamwork and quick actions were crucial in stabilizing the victim and getting him the medical attention he needed. “We train, we train and we train, but when it’s time to do it, it’s different,” Officer Koual reflected.
Thanks to their immediate response, the victim was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he received the urgent care required to save his life. The community is expressing their gratitude for the officers’ actions. “Their quick thinking and dedication made a significant difference,” said a METRO spokesperson. “We are proud of their service.”
Houston residents are sharing their appreciation for Officers Koual, Wiley, and Rodriguez. Their efforts during the storm highlight the important role first responders play in keeping the community safe.
