NORTHEAST HOUSTON — A man armed with an automatic weapon opened fire on moving vehicles Friday morning in northeast Houston, striking three people before Houston police and a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper confronted the suspect and opened fire.
The incident began at approximately 11:02 a.m. in the 6300 block of N. Wayside Drive after Houston police received multiple calls reporting a man shooting at moving vehicles. Officers arrived within minutes and located the suspect. According to HPD Assistant Chief Yaser Bashir, officers gave the suspect verbal commands and ordered him to drop the weapon before the confrontation escalated.
Three HPD officers and one DPS trooper discharged their weapons during the confrontation. The suspect was struck multiple times and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. His current condition has not been released.
Before officers arrived, investigators say the suspect fired at three moving vehicles. Three civilians were struck by gunfire and are reported to be in stable condition. A mother and her daughter were among those injured and were able to drive themselves to HFD Station 43 at 7330 N. Wayside Drive, where they sought medical assistance. A male in another vehicle was also struck by gunfire and is reported to be stable. A third vehicle was struck by gunfire, but no injuries were reported among its occupants.
No police officers were injured during the confrontation.
As the shooting unfolded, a worker at the nearby Chicken Plus restaurant recognized the danger and attempted to warn motorists traveling toward the area where the gunman was firing. David Davis and other employees reportedly warned drivers about the active shooter and tried to keep motorists from continuing toward the danger area. The gunman eventually moved toward the restaurant, prompting employees to move inside for safety.
The actions of the restaurant workers came as motorists were unknowingly traveling toward an active shooting scene. Their efforts to warn drivers potentially prevented additional people from entering the area where the gunman was firing.
The suspect is described as a Black male believed to be in his 30s.
The investigation remains active, with HPD’s Special Investigations Unit, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, DPS and the Texas Rangers conducting parallel investigations. HPD said the involved officers’ body-worn camera footage will be released within 30 days in accordance with department policy.
