The Katy community continues to mourn the heartbreaking loss of 11-year-old Lola Lewis, a young student whose life was tragically cut short following a crash involving an electric scooter.
The crash happened Thursday, September 10, shortly after 5 p.m. on Roesner Road near Elk Ridge Lane in Fort Bend County. Lola was riding an electric scooter when she was struck by a vehicle.
She suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown by Life Flight to a local hospital. Despite efforts to save her, Lola later died from her injuries.
Lola was a student at James and Sharon Tays Junior High School, where her death has left classmates, teachers and staff heartbroken.
In the days following Lola’s death, an outpouring of support has emerged throughout the Katy community.
Pink ribbons and flowers have been placed throughout the Hawks Landing community in Lola’s memory, creating a touching tribute and a visible reminder of the young life that was lost.
Her school community has also come together to honor her. Students and staff at Tays Junior High were encouraged to wear pink on Monday in Lola’s honor, giving classmates and teachers an opportunity to stand together and show their support for Lola’s family.
Former teachers and members of the school community have shared heartfelt memories of Lola, remembering her personality, friendship and the joy she brought to those around her.
For those who knew Lola, the pink ribbons represent more than a color. They represent love, remembrance and a community standing beside a grieving family.
Lola’s death is also a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of talking with children about electric scooter and bicycle safety.
Parents are encouraged to speak with their children about wearing helmets, remaining alert, following traffic laws, stopping at intersections and understanding the dangers of riding near busy roadways.
Children should also understand that being visible does not always mean a driver sees them.
No family should ever have to experience the pain of losing a child.

The Katy community is showing that, even in the darkest moments, people can come together to support one another.
