A 12-year-old boy is hospitalized in fair condition after being struck by gunfire during a shooting incident Friday night in the Cypress area, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the 8700 block of Barker Cypress Road near West Road, where investigators learned the child had been sitting inside his parents’ minivan when the shooting occurred. The vehicle was occupied by the boy’s parents and three siblings.
The family had been parked outside a business while waiting for another family member to exit. Investigators say the family was not involved in the confrontation that led to the gunfire.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, someone inside a dark-colored sedan traveling northbound on Barker Cypress Road fired multiple shots toward a lifted black truck that was traveling through the parking lot.
The family’s minivan was positioned between the lifted truck and the sedan as the sedan traveled parallel to the truck and the shots were fired. The 12-year-old was struck near his shoulder area.
Following the shooting, the child was taken to a standalone emergency room located across from Kroger in the Towne Lake shopping center. Life Flight was called to assist with the transfer, landing in the Kroger parking lot before the child was transferred for air transport.
The boy is currently hospitalized in fair condition.
Initial information about the incident indicated the shooting occurred somewhere near or around Wings & More off Barker Cypress Road near Towne Lake. Authorities later identified the incident location as the 8700 block of Barker Cypress Road near West Road.
Detectives responded to the scene and are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have not indicated that the child or his family were the intended targets.
Investigators are working to identify the individuals involved and determine what led to the gunfire. At this time, information about any arrests or identified suspects has not been released.
