Hazy Skies Over Houston Caused by Agricultural Fires from Mexico and Central America

Houston residents woke up to hazy skies on Wednesday, with southeast winds carrying smoke from agricultural fires in Mexico and Central America. These winds, blowing at 15-20 mph, have brought smoke particles into southeast Texas, impacting air quality across the region.

While this phenomenon is not unusual for this time of year, it has significantly affected air quality levels in Houston. The situation is particularly concerning for individuals with lung sensitivity or pre-existing health conditions. Health experts advise these individuals to limit their time outdoors until air quality improves.

The smoke and haze are more intense further into south Texas. A high-pressure system centered over Mexico, coupled with a warm temperature inversion layer, has caused the smoke to linger in the skies across southeast Texas.

However, relief is on the way. A weak cold front is expected to sweep through Texas on Thursday, bringing the possibility of rain. This weather change will help push the smoke and haze away from the region. Nonetheless, residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts, as there is a severe weather threat north and west of Houston.

For now, residents are urged to take precautions, stay indoors if possible, and monitor local air quality updates until the situation improves.
