Union Pacific’s iconic Big Boy No. 4014, one of the world’s largest steam locomotives, is set to begin its “Heartland of America Tour” on Wednesday, August 28, departing from Cheyenne, Wyoming. This historic locomotive will traverse nine additional states, including Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas, during its eight-week journey. The tour is scheduled to conclude in late October, offering a unique opportunity for rail enthusiasts and history buffs to witness this engineering marvel in person.
Tour Highlights and Display Days
Big Boy No. 4014 will be on public display at several key locations during the tour, offering free admission for all visitors:
These display days are the best opportunities to see Big Boy up close, as the locomotive will be stationary, allowing for photos and a deeper appreciation of its historical significance.
Safety First: Guidelines for Viewing the Big Boy
Union Pacific emphasizes the importance of safety during the tour. Visitors are urged to stay at least 25 feet away from all railroad tracks, including when operating drones. It’s important to remember that railroad tracks, trestles, yards, and rights of way are private property, and trespassing is strictly prohibited. Additionally, visitors should never assume that tracks are inactive and should always expect a train.
Drivers are also reminded not to pace the train, as this can be dangerous and disruptive to both traffic and the train’s operation.
Exclusive Cab Ride Auction
While there will be no passenger excursions during the Heartland of America tour, Union Pacific is offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for four lucky individuals to ride in the Big Boy’s cab. This unique experience is being auctioned off, with all proceeds benefiting the Union Pacific Museum Association and Union Pacific’s Friend-to-Friend Network, a nonprofit organization that supports railroad families facing hardships. The auction runs from Monday, August 12 to Monday, August 19, and details can be found at https://rarauctions.com/upm.
Overnight Stops and Security Measures
The Big Boy will make several overnight stops during its journey. However, these locations will be closed to the public due to safety and security concerns. Non-employees attempting to access these areas without permission will be considered trespassers.
