Burglary Suspect Killed, Private Security Officer Wounded in River Oaks Shooting

Houston, TX – A burglary suspect was fatally shot and a private security officer injured Sunday afternoon during a confrontation in one of Houston’s most prominent neighborhoods.

The shooting occurred just before 3:00 p.m. on May 4, 2025, in the 3200 block of San Felipe Street, near River Oaks Elementary School. According to the Houston Police Department, a River Oaks Patrol officer—part of a private security team contracted to provide law enforcement support in the area—responded to a report of a residential burglary in progress.

Upon arrival, the officer encountered the suspect, who fled on foot. A brief pursuit led to an exchange of gunfire in an alleyway behind the school grounds. The officer sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in stable condition. The suspect, described as a male involved in the attempted burglary, was pronounced deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest.

While the school itself was not in session at the time of the incident, the adjacent park and recreational areas were occupied by community members. No bystanders were injured.

Houston Fire Department personnel, including Ambulance 11 and Ladder 16, responded to the scene, and law enforcement quickly secured the area with an ongoing investigation launched by HPD detectives.

The identity of the deceased suspect has not been released, and investigators are reviewing body camera footage and witness statements to determine the full sequence of events that led to the shooting.

This incident has raised concerns among residents about safety and the role of private patrol services in high-profile neighborhoods. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact the Houston Police Department.
