SPRING, TX – June 26, 2025 — A major standoff that brought traffic to a halt in both directions on Interstate 45 near Cypresswood Drive ended peacefully Thursday evening, after law enforcement spent nearly five hours negotiating with an armed woman in mental distress.
According to deputies with Harris County Precinct 4, the situation began just before 1:30 p.m. when a 64-year-old woman intentionally crashed her vehicle into the back of an 18-wheeler in the southbound lanes of I-45. Following the crash, she exited the vehicle, set up a folding chair in the middle of the freeway, and sat down while holding a handgun.
Deputies responded quickly and shut down all lanes of I-45 in both directions, creating a major traffic disruption extending as far north as The Woodlands. Officers established a perimeter while a mental health intervention team and trained crisis negotiators engaged the woman in communication. Family members were also brought in to assist with the de-escalation efforts.
Throughout the standoff, authorities say the woman repeatedly held the gun to her head and refused to comply with commands to surrender or disarm. Law enforcement remained at a safe distance while working toward a non-violent resolution. Despite the high-risk nature of the situation, no shots were fired, and no injuries were reported.
By approximately 6:30 p.m., negotiators were able to convince the woman to surrender. She was taken into custody without incident and immediately transported to a medical facility for mental health evaluation and treatment. Her identity has not yet been released.
All lanes of I-45 were gradually reopened following the resolution, though traffic backups persisted into the evening hours. Motorists had been diverted to alternate routes, including the Hardy Toll Road, during the standoff.

The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office credited the peaceful outcome to the coordinated response of deputies, crisis teams, and family members who worked together to safely end the incident.
An investigation into the crash and the woman’s actions is ongoing. Authorities have not announced any charges at this time.
