CHANNELVIEW, Texas — An hours-long manhunt in East Harris County came to an end Thursday morning after authorities arrested a 25-year-old man accused of shooting a Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy and fleeing in the deputy’s patrol vehicle.
The incident began Wednesday night when HCSO deputies responded to a family disturbance in the 1100 block of Bayou Drive near the East Freeway in Channelview.
According to investigators, the deputy encountered gunfire during the response and was struck in the lower portion of his body. He was transported to a local hospital and was reported to be in fair condition.
The suspect was identified as Chase Layne Patin.
Authorities said Patin fled the scene in the deputy’s marked patrol vehicle. The vehicle was located a short time later near Dell Dale and the East Freeway, but Patin was not inside.
A large-scale search then began across the surrounding Channelview area, with multiple law enforcement agencies assisting HCSO.
Suspect Found Hiding
The search continued throughout the night before Patin was located hiding inside a shed near a wooded area off West Brentwood.
A resident reportedly contacted authorities after noticing suspicious activity in the area. Law enforcement responded and located Patin.
He was taken into custody without further incident, bringing the manhunt to an end.
Charges Filed
Patin faces multiple felony charges related to the incident, including aggravated assault of a public servant involving a firearm and a felony theft charge related to the patrol vehicle.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges or information could be released as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The overnight search prompted a significant law enforcement presence throughout the area, with residents urged to remain vigilant and avoid areas where deputies were conducting the search.
Thankfully, the injured HCSO deputy survived the shooting and is recovering in the hospital.
