A woman was killed in a major crash involving a Houston Police Department patrol vehicle on IH-69 Northbound at IH-610, just past Cavalcade.
According to HPD Sgt. Mike Barrow with the Vehicular Crimes Division, officers were responding to a traffic hazard after a semi-truck overturned on an overpass ramp above the freeway. Liquid cargo was leaking from the overturned truck onto the roadway below, creating a dangerous condition for motorists.
HPD officers were positioned on the roadway while addressing the hazard when the collision occurred.
One HPD officer was transported to a hospital following the crash. Sgt. Barrow said the officer is expected to be okay.
The driver of a red pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of family.
Preliminary Investigation
Sgt. Barrow said investigators determined the red pickup truck was traveling at a high rate of speed before striking the HPD vehicle. Investigators also observed very little evidence of braking before the collision.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash, including whether intoxication or impairment may have played a role. No determination regarding impairment has been announced.
The investigation remains active, and the preliminary findings could change as investigators review additional evidence.
Traffic Impact
IH-69 Northbound at IH-610 was closed while emergency crews and investigators worked the scene. The roadway has since reopened.
