A fatal wrong-way collision shut down all westbound lanes of IH-610 South Loop at SH-288 early Sunday morning, causing significant traffic disruptions.
Authorities said units were dispatched to the crash at approximately 4:48 a.m. A sedan traveling the wrong way on the freeway reportedly merged into the second lane before colliding head-on with a Chevrolet Suburban.
The driver of the sedan, a Black male believed to be in his late 40s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The driver of the Suburban, a Hispanic adult male, was transported to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition. Authorities reported no apparent signs of impairment involving the Suburban’s driver.
Investigators had not determined where the wrong-way driver entered the freeway.
During the freeway closure, a separate crash occurred when a truck driver reportedly failed to pay attention and struck two Houston Police Department units positioned to block traffic.
No injuries were reported in that incident. Initial screening indicated the truck driver did not appear to be impaired. Authorities confirmed the crash was unrelated to the fatal collision.
The westbound lanes of IH-610 at SH-288 remained closed while emergency crews worked the scene and authorities investigated. All westbound traffic was diverted onto the SH-288 exit.
The freeway reopened by midmorning, allowing traffic to resume through the area.
The fatal collision remained under investigation.
