Two people were killed Thursday evening following a high-speed single-vehicle crash in northeast Houston, according to the Houston Police Department.
The crash occurred shortly after 5:00 p.m. at 935 Lockwood Drive in Houston’s Fifth Ward. Lieutenant Larry Crowson said a Precinct 6 constable sergeant was traveling southbound on Lockwood when he observed a white Dodge Challenger traveling northbound at a high rate of speed. Investigators believe the driver lost control after striking a dip in the roadway, causing the vehicle to leave the road and crash into a tree.
Responding crews with the Houston Fire Department arrived at the scene and extricated an adult male and an adult female from the vehicle. Both occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims pending notification of next of kin.
HPD Vehicle Crimes investigators remained on scene for several hours interviewing witnesses and canvassing nearby businesses for possible surveillance footage that may help determine the events leading up to the crash. Police stated the incident does not appear to be suspicious, and excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor.
Lockwood Drive was temporarily closed while investigators processed the scene and awaited the arrival of the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details are expected to be released as they become available.
